Background of the Study (200 words)
Artisan professions play a significant role in local economies, yet gender-based discrimination often affects participation in these trades. In Abakaliki Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, traditional perceptions about gender roles have influenced the distribution of artisan work. Women artisans frequently face barriers such as limited access to training, credit, and market opportunities (Ifeoma, 2023). Meanwhile, men generally dominate the more lucrative sectors of the craft and trade industries (Ngozi, 2024). This discrimination not only restricts women’s economic empowerment but also stifles the full potential of local artisan sectors. Emerging initiatives aimed at capacity building and financial inclusion are challenging these long-standing practices (Chidera, 2025). The study investigates the nature and extent of gender-based discrimination in artisan professions, examining how socio-cultural norms and institutional practices limit women’s participation. Through both qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys, the research seeks to provide a comprehensive analysis of the obstacles faced by women artisans and propose practical measures to foster an inclusive artisan economy (Amarachi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem (100 words)
In Abakaliki, gender-based discrimination in artisan professions persists, limiting women’s access to training, financial resources, and market networks. These discriminatory practices hinder their economic growth and contribute to persistent gender inequalities in the craft industry (Chidera, 2024). The lack of targeted interventions and supportive policies further exacerbates the problem, leaving female artisans marginalized. This study aims to investigate the underlying causes of these disparities and develop strategies to promote greater gender equity within artisan sectors (Ifeoma, 2025).
